ART

Art Foundations
No prerequisites
9th-12th grade
1.5 credits (one semester long) Elective Credit


Art Foundations is a semester long survey of concepts, methods, and issues of design as a vehicle of visual organization, thought, and expression. The subject is explored through lectures, discussions, critiques, and the process of making images and objects. Art Foundation focuses on 2 dimensional art such as drawing and painting.

MUSIC

Choir (Concert)
No prerequisites
9th-12th grade
1.5 credits (one semester long) Elective Credit

The PSA Concert Choir is a 35-voice SATB ensemble. The choir is currently comprised of freshmen and sophomores. Students in Concert Choir study repertoire from a wide variety of genres with an emphasis on popular music. Students learn proper vocal and ensemble techniques, diction and intonation. The Concert Choir has an elected president and vice-president who each take on additional duties. The Concert Choir currently performs in two formal concerts during the school year, as well as informal community and school events.

Music Theory
No prerequisites
9th-12th grade
1.5 credits (one semester long) Elective Credit

Music Theory and Piano is an elective class for sophomore and junior students that meet every day for 50 minutes. Theory and piano are taught simultaneously in PSA's Yamaha Piano Lab. Students receive group and individual instruction in note and rhythm reading, chords, ear training, and analysis. This class follows Alfred's Music Theory curriculum and piano books. Other topics covered in this advanced music class include the science of sound, music technology, composition, and careers in music.

CAREER

Career Exploration
No prerequisites
9th-12th grade
1.5 credits (one semester long) Elective Credit

This course will provide students an opportunity to explore a variety of careers and post secondary educational options as they create an "action plan" for finding and obtaining a rewarding future career. Students will participate in a number of self assessments to clarify their interests, abilities, and work preferences. While students investigate different career pathways and educational options they will also be developing the materials that are required for a successful job search including a resume, practice application and cover letter, references, recommendations, and work samples.

Professional workplace and communication skills will be stressed as students prepare for interviews and will be expected throughout the course. In addition to assignments, speakers, and field trips student participation in weekly job shadowing/mentorship activates will also be required.

· Self assess skills, interests values, and lifestyle choices in relationship to health careers
· Examine and interpret the levels of education, licensing/certification requirements, employment opportunities, workplace environment, and career growth potential for a minimum of three preferred careers
· Apply the design cycle to career choice
· Create a Career Action Plan
· Prepare the documents necessary for a job search
· Prepare for a job interview
· Produce a paper and electronic portfolio of career resources
· Participate in a minimum of 12 hours of supervised job shadowing
